When we pick up a photograph from times long past, our memories begin to jump back and forth between the now, the past, and the future. Even though it is only a moment from stretching back from the past with no previous or post reference frame, it simultaneously arouses both our memory and imagination. The reason this allows us to produce memory and imagination comes from the "distance" and the "fragile moment" which allows us to generate the possibility of visualization. Photography requires good lighting yet the image that faintly appears when phosphorous pigments are used requires a dark environment. This image, which shines forth "aura" from the darkness is like an afterimage which seems near yet distant.
