Creating an alternative scenery of technology with art and enriching art with technology
Is the year 2012 going to hold big changes for us as predicted ? Could these changes be the birth of a new universal era? "Transjourney – 2012 Future Media Festival," which covers cross-disciplinary areas of study related to technology, art, and society as well as global cultural issues, will be officially launched on January 1st, 2012 by the Kuandu Museum at Taipei National University of the Arts. This exhibition is the first "Future Media Festival" held in Taiwan which will include an international forum, digital art, interactive creations, an animation section, and workshops, in addition to multimedia and musical performances. Invited participants include both domestic and internationally recognized artists, and talented application designers from academic research institutions. Over all there will be over 40 works by artists and researchers from Taiwan media art world on display in panoramic exhibition style at the "Transjourney – 2012 Future Media Festival." This exhibition is not only an opportunity to assemble but also a chance to stimulate a creative force here. The exhibition will last from January 1st, 2012 to February 19th. Visitors are invited to participate in this rewarding transjourney.
Technological art is more than a special genre that crosses over different disciplinary. It is a brand new subject that explores deep into contemporary art and culture, reconstructs the relationship between society and art. More than forty domestic and foreign artists have been invited to participate in this exhibition. Starting from the idea of gathering "digital media" we proceeded to include many additional types of art, digital performances, applied creations and related forums and lectures. We wish to present the possibilities for the future that we can imagine for humanity in the field of creative art under the influence of modern day society.
Through exhibiting many pieces of artwork that employ many different forms of media, we are best able to show the development of contemporary art. In addition to important Taiwanese contemporary art, many other internationally famous artists have been invited to display their works at the exhibition. Nam Jun Paik’s work Wright Brothers creates a demonstrable possibility of connection between the images, human relationship (brothers) and a flying machine. In Bill Viola’s work Two Women – where the water curtain separates the two women in the forground and background: the water curtain both separates and connects the two worlds. Goang-ming Yuan’s focus is the methods of documentation in imaging technology. In Disappearing Portrait – Mio he experiments directly with the “documentary material“, and uses phosphorus pigments to challenge the cognitive inertia of our records and memories that are built on silver bromide on film.Pey-chwen LIN’s work The Portrait of Eve Clone applies holography technology and the effect of the angle of view on what is seen, that we all know but take for granted.
For the artists of younger generations, media art is the best to express freely of their ideas and creativity, or even non-senseness. The examples are Chung-han Yao’s I Will be Broken, LuxuryLogico’s Swimming and Ultra Combos’ Snake and New Pong. Unstable Empathy 1.0 by Mattia Casalegno and Enzo Varriale is a work that simultaneously combines the facial expressions and brainwaves of two interactive participants, to create an interface across “facial muscle/neurons/interactive communication“, and on this interface, they test how “human interaction achieves rational consensus“. In the work Aurora – Eclipse, I-chenKUO uses light effects to activate sound, and uses it to create an established but alien ghostly soundscape. Yung-ta CHANG’s work YPhenomenon-Quadraphonic ver.2 points to the characteristics of sound itself. How about using“electricity“, the soul that supports the entire “media world“, to enable a lifeless man-made object to move. In Nils Völker’s work Seventy-Five and Shih-chieh HUANG’s EX-C-FB-Clear (KY), EX-C-FG-Clear (MRB), EX-C-FR-Clear (WM), BSB-G, electric fans seemingly bring sacks to life; Akibo LEE’s cute robots that greet humans, and Shih-chang LIN’s walking Pupufu also come alive because of their electric soul. Zimoun’s work 80 prepared dc-motors, cotton balls, 71x71x71cm cardboard boxes uses electrical current as sound to give the moving cotten balls the semblance of a soul. Wei-hao TSENG’s work In Sounds uses electrical current as a soul that moves from the body to the screen, brining the entire wall to life.
At this art festival, many artists who attempted to use performance to as the process to explore the wonder of media are also invited and these productions are W.A.V.E by YiLab, Spin by Yi HUANG, L’Après-midi de la Gravité produced by Center of Art and Technology, TNUA and Taipei University of the Arts, Day by LuxuryLogico, Funky Light, a collaboration between Digital Art Center, Taipei and several Taiwanese digital artists and Emptied Space by Shu-yi CHOU and Tung-yan CHOU.
In addition, for people who wish to deeply explore or personally experience technological artwork, the director of the Nam June Paik Art Center, Manu Park from Korea and the chief curator of the Yokohama Museum of Art, Taro Amano from Japan have been invited to lecture at the Future Media Symposium at the art festival. During a one-day activity, academic and industrial experts in Taiwan’s new media art will participate in a discussion on future trends in industry, technology, and art. People who would like to interact closely with the artists can choose to participate in Mattia Caselegno’s "Artist’s Workshop" to experience his truly delightful creation which employs the use of live brainwaves.
Miss Yi-ching CHEN, a famous domestic animation researcher, has been invited to organize "Canadian Digital Animation Works" as another attraction for this Festival. In cooperation with the National Film Board of Canada, an institution that has been established for over sixty years and that is famous for its animation experiments, Miss Yi-ching CHEN has selected ten short animated films that were produced over the past few years. These include traditional hand-drawn films as well as those created using puppets, cut-out animation, live action performers and digital 3D computer animation. As for the types of films, other than narrations there will be the autobiographies Sunday and Flawed, integrated dance and music experimental works like ORA and Mamori, as well as experimental avant-garde works like CMYK and Forming Game. Delightfully, we were able to invite Marc Bertrand, a senior animation producer from the National Film Board of Canada, to give a spectacular lecture related to animation and story narration.
During the joyous opening ceremonies on the first day of "Transjourney," there will be a live show integrating a large digital image and music for everyone to enjoy. A few years ago, the recipient of Ars Electornica First Prize, Canadian artist Herman Kolgen was invited to come to Taiwan and was enthusiastically received then. This year he will return to perform excerpts from his work Train Fragments with the Teacher and Student Percussion Group, TNUA and a secret special guest. The entire work will be performed on January 6th and 7th at the TNUA Dance Theatre by admission.
